  • Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)

    Overview
PCA allows the patient to be in control of his or her medication using a pump system.

    Detailed Description
A set dose is given continuously, via the pump, intravenously, subcutaneously, or intraspinally. PCA can also be used to control oral medication. In the event of a breakthrough pain, the patient can deliver an extra dose, or bolus, to combat it. As the patient changes positions or activities, the PCA allows her to adjust the amount of medication she receives.

People who are fully conscious can use PCA in the hospital or at home.
